Continuing her monthly series of gel plate printing workshops, Karen Doyle will teach different ways to incorporate gold leaf directly on the gel plate to add luminous and beautiful effects in your prints. Karen will demonstrate using gold and silver gilding sheets and loose-leaf flakes with and without stencils to create patterns and textures and add light, contrast and dimension to gel prints.
Gel plate printing is an experimental process, a combination of art and science, and Karen will talk about both. She will discuss what inspires her and share explanations of both successes and failures with gold leaf, and how these led to additional exploration. Karen will provide students will some gold and silver foils to use. Please see the materials list for full details. Come have fun, print, and make friends!

About Karen Doyle

Karen Doyle is an award-winning Impressionist oil painter who paints luminous, colorful landscapes of her local surroundings and the places she visits. A California native, she holds a BA in Psychology with a minor in Visual Art from UC San Diego and a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Fine Art from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon. In 2024, after moving to Palos Verdes, Karen retired from a 30-year corporate career at Nike and shifted her focus to painting and volunteering full-time in visual arts. She is President of the Board at Destination: Art in Torrance where she is also an Associate Artist member; an associate artist member of the California Art Club, The Artists' Studio and the Pacific Arts Groups at PVAC (the Palos Verdes Art Center). She is also a member of EASB (Experimental Artists of the South Bay) and an instructor at Destination: Art in Torrance. She volunteers her time teaching art to individuals impacted by cancer at the Cancer Support Community in Torrance. In addition to oil painting, Karen creates acrylic photo collages, abstract paintings, prints and the occasional pastel. https://www.karendoylefineart.com/
