Virginia Kamhi is drawn to the beauty of the ocean. The sea is her continual source of inspiration and fascination. In this workshop you will learn how to embody your paintings with textures, movement, and translucency of the ocean.

Day 1- Painting a Breaking Wave
Brief overview of wave science and movement and how it relates to painting.
Create a quick value sketch of our wave image.
Build a strong foundation with an underpainting of basic abstract shapes.
Learn how to create both depth and transparency by painting what lies beneath the surface.
Learn how motion bounces light and affects what we paint.
Learn how to paint wave shadows so they come to life.
Learn how to paint sea foam and how light affects the foam's colors.

Day 2- Paint a Coastal Scene
Learn the importance of direct observation.
Learn how to create a dynamic seascape composition.
Study gesture and structure.
Learn to paint sea spray so it looks light and airy.
Learn how to capture light, mood, and atmosphere.
Learn how mark making helps to express movement and texture in a seascape.
Learn to paint receding water on a beach and sunlit sand.

Demos will be painted in pastel, but all mediums are welcome as the information applies to all. Step by step samples will be provided in oil.


About Virginia Kamhi    
Virginia Kamhi (PSWC, AWA Associate with Distinction) has her M.A in Fine Art-
Painting from Academy of Art University. She has studied with many eminent pastel artists,
including Richard McKinley, Albert Handell, Lorenzo Chavez, and Jeanne Rosier Smith.
Kamhi’s works have been juried into six recent museum exhibitions She has been
juried into 17 international pastel exhibitions and has been published in Southwest Art
(2022) and local magazines. She recently was juried into the IAPS exhibition in
Albuquerque. There were over 2000 entries and her painting won an award of merit in the
open division.
She has received over 30 awards for her work since 2016, including Second Place
(California Art League, 2024), Third Place (Thousand Oaks Art Association Open Juried
Show, 2020), Best of Show (4 th Skies Competition, Fusion Art, 2020), Third Place (Westlake
Village Art Guild Open Juried Show, 2020), First Place (Westlake Village Art Guild Members
Show, 2018).
She serves on the board for Pastel Society of Southern California and Allied Artists
of the Santa Monica Mountains and Seashore and is a member of Pastel Society of
America, California Art Club, American Women Artists, PSWC, PSGC, WVAG, SCAPE, and
Santa Barbara Art Association.
Her work may be seen at Gallery 113 in Santa Barbara and West Hills Gallery in
Ojai, CA. She currently has a solo show at Channel Islands Maritime Museum in Oxnard
that will run through September 18.
