Do you like to gel plate print but aren't sure how to make a finished, display-worthy print? In this month's workshop, Karen Doyle will inspire students to layer and experiment with multiple gel plate techniques to create a finished work of art, and then mount it for display. This new workshop encourages students to produce finished pieces suitable for mounting or framing while offering the chance to dive deeper into one or more techniques that interest them. Bring your stencils, botanicals, laser print images or magazine transfers; bring the kinds of paint and paper you enjoy or want to try. Bring gelli prints you have already created to work on further, or that you want to mount as finished prints. Karen will demonstrate her layered printing process using multiple techniques and how she mounts finished prints. Karen will provide each student with one 8" x 10" canvas to mount one of their own prints during class. She will also help students individually improve the techniques they want to focus on to create "finished" prints.
Gel plate printing is an experimental process - a combination of art and science - and Karen talks about both. She will discuss her inspirations and explain both successes and failures, detailing how these led to further exploration in creating finished prints using multiple techniques. * You do not need to have taken Karen’s prior workshops to join this one. If you are a beginner, you can focus on experimenting with different gel print techniques (play) instead of trying to create a finished work of art (print) to mount.

About Karen Doyle

Karen Doyle is an award-winning Impressionist oil painter who paints luminous, colorful landscapes of her local surroundings and the places she visits. A California native, she holds a BA in Psychology with a minor in Visual Art from UC San Diego and a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Fine Art from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon. In 2024, after moving to Palos Verdes, Karen retired from a 30-year corporate career at Nike and shifted her focus to painting and volunteering full-time in visual arts. She is President of the Board at Destination: Art in Torrance where she is also an Associate Artist member; an associate artist member of the California Art Club, The Artists' Studio and the Pacific Arts Groups at PVAC (the Palos Verdes Art Center). She is also a member of EASB (Experimental Artists of the South Bay) and an instructor at Destination: Art in Torrance. She volunteers her time teaching art to individuals impacted by cancer at the Cancer Support Community in Torrance. In addition to oil painting, Karen creates acrylic photo collages, abstract paintings, prints and the occasional pastel. https://www.karendoylefineart.com/
