A good underpainting is the foundation for a great painting. In this workshop we will paint 2 different paintings, some colorful Koi fish and a landscape, using 2 different underpainting techniques. Jump in and have some fun using these materials, bold darks are the foundation of a good painting.

The first underpainting we will use India ink, black and color, fabulous for darks, for the second underpainting we will use an alcohol wash over pastels. I will also review a technique that I stumbled on, using a broad sponge for fabulous skies. This workshop will emphasize working quickly, loosely, with bold strokes. Our intent is to complete one painting using India ink in the first hour and then proceed to the second alcohol method.
Each session will be a paint along, and I will provide everyone with a photograph highlighting each of the two underpainting styles. I will demonstrate each step, and you will paint along each step as we complete the painting. This will be a fun workshop, and each artist will be working to complete 2 paintings during instruction time. Sign up and learn Mike’s underpainting techniques for a looser, painterly pastel painting. Be ready to paint and have some fun.
