The goal of the workshop is to review techniques and procedures of improving your plein air painting by focusing on visualization, simplification, and editing while accentuating expression, mood, and atmosphere. No subject is perfect but can be improve by playing with design strategies.

Through a series of exercises and Geoff’s step by steps demonstrations, the class will practice seeing value, connecting shape, and capturing light and shadow.

Demonstrations, will vary in subject matter from landscape, waterscape, and cityscapes. Even though the scenes change, Geoff will take the class through the same process of creating a strong expressive design.

About Geoff Allen
“Going with the flow” is what inspires Geoff. He loves the process of inserting
himself into an environment or scene with the goal of capturing its elusive
essence. This process began in college with an obsession with Street
Photography. Succeeding in plein air painting relies both on being sensitive to
the place, its beauty, challenges, distractions and light as well as allowing himself
to be a filter. The mystery of not knowing the expressive outcome and allowing
for discovery along the way makes plein air painting Geoff’s preferred art making
process.
He received his MFA from Claremont Graduate University, Claremont, CA and
taught drawing, design, and painting courses at the college level. Lives in the
San Diego area and is a member of the San Diego Watercolor Society, California
Art Club, National watercolor Society, and American Impressionist Society. Geoff
is a Signature Member of the Laguna Plein Air painter’s Association.xS
