Play while learning about how to paint the arid desert landscape. The arid landscape receives intense light resulting in areas of high contrast between light and shadow. Sandy areas appear nearly white while shadow areas are deep blue. During this intense 2-day workshop, you will discover what colors and techniques can be used for painting this extreme environment. We will explore techniques for conveying textures within the arid landscape, and learn how to simplify an otherwise unruly landscape into a striking painting. Attention will be paid to how to convey sandy areas; native desert plants, distant mountains and skies. Unlike a traditional workshop format with a full demonstration in the morning, and only a few hours left to paint in the afternoon, we will begin our day painting small studies to explore new information and then paint larger in the afternoon implementing what we learned in the morning. Basically, we will be creating all day for 2 days! My plan is for you to leave buzzing with creative energy, confidence and tools for understanding how to convey the desert landscape. Come prepared to play and have fun!

About Natalie Richards
Richards, recently awarded Master Circle status at IAPS 2026, has been a juried exhibitor at more than 20 exhibitions since 2018. In that time she's also received 14 awards and honors including First Place at the 2025 Idyllwild Plein Air Festival, received Artist's Choice Award at the 2025 Borrego Springs Plein Air Invitational, and Best Pastel at the 2024 Borrego Springs Plein Air Invitation, Third Place for the Pastel Society of Southern California's 2025 Make Your Mark and Fourth Place in the Landscape Division of 2025 Pastel 100.
Richards is the pastel instructor at the Redlands Art Gallery in Redlands, CA and holds workshops at the Desert Art Center in Palm Springs, CA.
