Texture is one of the 7 Elements of Art, and understanding it fully will lead to a stronger finished painting. Textures can add variety, mood, and drama to your piece! This class will explore the creative methods Otto employs in his paintings. The first day students will have plenty of hands on activity, learning many traditional and contemporary techniques, while the second day will allow you to hone in on your preferred textures and take those to a further level of development. Fun for any level of artist!

About Otto Sturcke
Otto Stürcke was born in 1971 and grew up in Southern California. Primarily self-taught, Stürcke joined the U.S. Marine Corps in hopes of attaining financial aid to attend an art college. His plans were momentarily altered in 1991 when he was called to serve in Desert Storm. Soon after his military service, Stürcke enrolled in art workshops and courses at several local art associations while launching his illustration career under the mentorship of Mike Butkus. Although he worked in several mediums as an illustrator, Stürcke found pastels to be his principal medium of choice and ventured into the chiaroscuro style of painting.

As a representational artist who is greatly influenced by the Dutch Masters, Otto Stürcke seeks to impart sincerity, and an admiration for the classical in a contemporary world through a variety of favored techniques. He often aims to depict an allegorical narrative with an intriguing balance of light and dark.

Recognition and awards for his work include, Master Circle Status with the International Association of Pastel Societies, Master Pastelist title and honoree of the Art Spirit Foundation Dianne B. Bernhard Gold Medal Award by the Pastel Society of America. His works are included in the American Latino Collective at the Smithsonian Museum and for several years has been designated as part of the Butler Institute of American Art Selection. He has been honored with several “Best In Show” awards in prestigious exhibitions and was one the artists nominated as "Best of 2012" by Art Los Angeles Magazine. Other awards include, 1st Place Award at the 4th Annual Rejoice In Art! National Exhibition, 1st Place in Pastel Journal’s 19th Annual Pastel 100 Competition Animal/Wildlife Category, People’s Choice Award in the 15th Annual Members Show of the Pastel Society of Southern California, Stabilo Award at the 1st International Pastel Exhibition in Rome, and the PleinAir Magazine/Streamline Publishing Award by the Pastel Society of the West Coast. His work has been published in the French publication “40 Maitres du Pastel” (40 Masters of Pastel) by Pratique des Arts Magazine, “The Art of Chalk” by Tracy Lee Stum, and as “Artist of Note” by Southwest Art Magazine.
