IN THIS WORKSHOP TERESA WILL HELP YOU TAKE YOUR LANDSCAPES TO A POWERFUL NEW LEVEL. THE WORKSHOP WILL DEMONSTRATE TERESA’S LOVE FOR LIGHT AND MOOD WITH THE OVERALL FOCUS: TO BUILD A BETTER LANDSCAPE.
This workshop will focus on the basics for creating dramatic, dynamic, timeless landscapes: value, composition and simplifying shapes into a strong design. Color relationships, edges, temperature of light will be discussed, as well as the application of value studies for a strong start and atmospheric perspective for a more dynamic statement in your paintings. Also to be discussed: creating a passionate approach to your subject matter, evoking a more interactive response with the viewer. This workshop is open to beginning through advanced painters.
Each day will begin with a demonstration. Teresa enjoys giving as much knowledge and understanding of the pastel medium as possible in the intensive workshop scenario. Explaining her technique and approach, her demonstrations are in depth and developed. She often chooses to work with photos she has not previously used, allowing the workshop participants to watch (as though in her studio) as she works through and resolves different issues during the painting process. There will be time during the demonstration for questions and answers. The remainder of each day will be devoted to helping the participants develop their paintings starting with a value study. Believing this is essential for honing composition, value, shapes, etc. and ultimately a better painting. Personal attention is very important, working continually from participant to participant, giving constructive critiques and pointers as their paintings progress.
WORKSHOP TOPICS
TAKING YOUR LANDSCAPES FROM “NICE” to “DYNAMIC” You will learn the five techniques Teresa uses for a more powerful painting. Using stronger value statements and better shapes you will learn to build your landscape with thoughtful steps.
COLOR
Loose the fear of color...learn to add color and keep your values correct. Getting away from green!
COMPOSITION
Learn the use of engaging “lead-ins”, better placement of focal areas and thumbnail sketches for stronger compositions.
EXPAND YOUR LANDSCAPE WITH DRAMATIC SKIES Creating depth and movement with skies.
CREATING MOOD AND ATMOSPHERE
The use of appropriate color palettes, atmospheric perspective, creative mark making, layering and correct edge quality to create engaging landscapes
WORKING FROM PHOTOS
Learn to take better reference photos. How to use your camera/phone to create better compositions. How to simplify and what to leave out when working from photos. Combining photos.

About Teresa Saia-Morell
Teresa is a recognized workshop instructor nationally and in
Europe. She is a Master Pastelist with the International
Association Pastel Societies and a Signature member of the
American Impressionist Society and PSA signature status. She
enjoys creating a supportive and energetic atmosphere in which
students can thrive, establishing their individual style and artistic
statement. Always striving for dynamic mark, making, a rich,
radiant palette and evoking moods that engage the viewer.
Believing that painting is a process and helping the participants
relax and enjoy the journey. Workshops are a wonderful time to
travel outside your comfort zone and explore new directions.
