In this course, we will explore the choices we have when starting a pastel painting using underpainting. Underpainting with color can enhance the outcome of a painting. By working with watercolor or water-based mediums we will see how color in the early stages can support the harmony, temperature, contrast, and value of the pastel layers going on top.
Exercises using different color underpainting choices based on applied color theory with the same subject will be studied in class for the first 2 weeks. In the last 3 weeks, we will apply information from our small study exercises to our painting projects.
Photos will be provided for each exercise and project, or you may use your own.
The basics of drawing, composition, shapes, value, and color will always be addressed.

About Dori Dewberry
Dori has been exploring the process of creating pastel paintings for nearly 23 years. Her lifelong exploration and education into the creative process has been a natural transition to teaching art to young students as well as adults. She does experimenting with new materials, techniques, applications, and sharing her knowledge. Having an open dialogue with her students on their art journey is one of the things she loves best.
